Situated at 7, rue de Bourgogne, in the center of Arbois, this building was constructed in the 17th century on the ramparts of the original village first established in the 13th century. In 1674, Arbois came under French control when the troops of Louis XIV laid siege to the town, which at the time was in the hands of the Hapsburg princes and the kings of Spain.
The name of our street, rue de Bourgogne, evokes and highlights the common history of Arbois, the Jura and the neighboring region of Burgundy, all of which at one point composed the region of Comté. These historical connections are manifest in the numerous mansions adjacent to La Closerie, like the Cave de la Reine Jeanne. In 2007, La Closerie les Capucines was entirely renovated from its entrance through to its back garden, which borders the Cuisance River flowing through the village of Arbois. We constantly strive to improve the physical infrastructure while offering a pied-a-terre full of the history of Arbois.
In May 2018, La Closerie les Capucines joined the Mad Rose Group in furtherance of the commitment of Neal Rosenthal, its founder, to promote the terroir of the Jura to which he has been attached for forty years. Rosenthal Wine Merchant is a New York City based importer of the classical wines of western Europe since 1977. Neal has always specialized in presenting the highest quality, limited production wines from small, family-run estates throughout France, Italy, Switzerland and Catalonia. At the core of his work is the dedication to wines of terroir and the men and women who work diligently to respect this important concept. He has been particularly active in the Jura and, during one of his numerous visits to his growers, Neal was introduced to La Closerie les Capucines by his good friend and comrade, Jacques Puffeney. The opportunity to acquire La Closerie arose and the story now continues…

Founded in 1977 in New York City by Neal Rosenthal, the Mad Rose Group is above all a specialist in the importation into the US of European wines of exceptional quality produced in limited quantities by artisanal family domaines in France, Italy, Switzerland and Catalonia. These wines are chosen as the finest expressions of their respective terroirs and represent the very personal voices and talents of the men and women who produce them.
Over the decades, Neal Rosenthal has built formidable relationships with many artisans and vignerons, innkeepers and chefs, all of whose work can be shared and appreciated through the Mad Rose Group.
Today, the Mad Rose Group continues its search for the finest in wine (Rosenthal Wine Merchant), food (Mad Rose Specialty Foods) and travel experiences (Mad Rose Journeys) and now draws within its family the unique and compelling hotel, La Closerie les Capucines, a gem of Arbois in the heart of the French Jura.
Importantly, the enterprises of the Mad Rose Group work together to connect people to place.
They are bound by three values: respect for the artisan – for his/her craft as well as financial viability, an unwavering respect for the natural world and a passion for helping others better understand it, and honoring of the human imagination – doing all within our power to foster creative thinking across business, the arts and science.
