The House

Our story

Situated at 7, rue de Bourgogne, in the center of Arbois, this building was constructed in the 17th century on the ramparts of the original village first established in the 13th century. 1674, Arbois came under French control when the troops of Louis XIV laid siege to the town, which at the time was in the hands of the Hapsburg princes and the kings of Spain.

The name of our street, rue de Bourgogne, evokes and highlights the common history of Arbois, the Jura and the neighboring region of Burgundy, all of which at one point composed the region of Comté. These historical connections are manifest in the numerous mansions adjacent to La Closerie les Capucines, like the Cave de la Reine Jeanne.

In 2007, La Closerie les Capucines was entirely renovated from its entrance through to the back garden, which borders the Cuisance River flowing through the village of Arbois.

In May 2018, La Closerie les Capucines joined the Mad Rose Group in furtherance of the commitment of Neal Rosenthal, its founder, to promote the terroir of the Jura to which he has been attached for forty years.

Rosenthal Wine Merchant is a New York City based importer of the classical wines of western Europe since 1977. Neal has always specialized in presenting the highest quality, limited production wines from small, family-run estates throughout France, Italy, Switzerland and Catalonia. Visiting his winemaker friends several times a year, one of them introduced him to La Closerie les Capucines…
